Susan Desmond-Hellman, The Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, came to Santiago to give a talk called "Health Sciences Innovation in the 21st Century". She is a renowned leader in biotechnology, and she was chosen by Forbes magazine as one of the seven most important innovators int he world. Desmond-Hellmann talked about her experience as the President of Product Development at Genentech between 2004 and 2009, a period in which the company developed and had the FDA approve numerous anti-cancer drugs (Leucentis, Avastin, Hereceptin, Tarceva, Rituxan y Xolair), thus becoming the main producer of cancer treatments in the United States. Her skills in biotechnology have led her to become part of the Biotech Hall of Fame in 2007, earn the sixth place in the Wall Street Journal ranking of "Women to Watch", and be nominated as "Woman of the Year" in 2006 by the Healthcare Businesswomen Association.
